The European Regional Master's Degree in Democracy and Human Rights in South-East Europe is a unique regional interdisciplinary one–year full time MA program. It was established in 2000, through the joint efforts of eleven participating universities and research centers, coordinated by the Center for Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies of the University of Sarajevo in cooperation with the University of Bologna through its Istituto per l'Europa Centro–Orientale e Balcanica. The ERMA program is an educational activity intended for students who want to combine practical experience in human rights issues with further academic study.
The program is organized in three terms: during the first term (from November until mid-June in Sarajevo) students attend lectures held by professors coming from the partner universities and are involved in academic activities such as writing of academic papers on topics related to human rights and exams.
Lectures are held in English and attendance is compulsory. During the second term (June and July) students take up an internship in selected organizations in the region. During the third term (September and October) students write their MA thesis at the premises of the University of Bologna in Italy.
ERMA is a highly competitive program. It is open to candidates who hold a high standard university degree in disciplines relevant to human rights, in particular law, social and political sciences and humanities from an accredited university.
