Forest and Landscape, Faculty of Life Sciences at University of Copenhagen is offering a PhD scholarship commencing August 01 2011 or soon thereafter.
Project description
With reference to the project manager, the work of the Ph.D. fellow will consist mainly of duties in connection with research and development on innovative planning and design solutions for holistic management of stormwater runoff in the urban green infrastructure with special focus on a) closing the local freshwater cycle by linking of stormwater runoff to shallow and deep groundwater aquifers, b) improving the biodiversity conditions of the green infrastructure, and c) increasing the quality of life for citizens.
This work will feed into the innovation consortium "Cities in Local Water Balance" and implies collaboration with other PhD/Post Doc fellows as well as private and public consortium partners, i.e. GEUS, Technological Institute, DTU, DHI, Per Aarsleff A/S, Wavin A/S, Orbicon A/S, Municipality of Copenhagen, Municipality of Aarhus, Municipality of Odense, Copenhagen Energy, Aarhus Water, VCS Denmark, and Avedre Wastewater Services.
Among the objectives of this study are to:
- Explore the potential of green infrastructures for creating synergetic solutions between freshwater management and sustainable urban development
- Develop methods for green infrastructure planning for sustainable freshwater management with special focus on stormwater runoff, local water balances, water quality and biodiversity
- Develop methods for green infrastructure design for sustainable freshwater management applied to different urban scales
Job description
Your key tasks as a PhD fellow at LIFE are:
- Manage and carry through your research project
- Take PhD courses
- Write scientific articles and your PhD thesis
- Participate in international congresses
- Stay at a research institution abroad for a few months
- Teach and disseminate your research
Terms of employment
The position will be filled according to the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The post is covered by the Protocol on Job Structure.

Key criteria for the assessment of candidates:
- A masters degree related to the subject area of the project:
- Architecture, landscape architecture
- Urban planning
- GIS
- The grade point average achieved
- Professional qualifications relevant to the PhD programme
- Previous publications
- Relevant work experience
- Other professional activities
- Language skills
- Interpersonal skills
- Experience with stormwater management will be an advantage.
Formal requirements
The positions are available for a 3-year period.
The Ph.D. student will be enrolled at the Faculty of Life Sciences,
University of Copenhagen, within the Research School for Forest,
Landscape and Planning - REFOLANA.
