PhD position in Mineralogy, petrology and tectonics with focus in high pressure rocks in The Caledonides

The Caledonide Orogen in Scandinavia, like the Himalayan Orogen in southern Asia, formed by collision of two continents and underthrusting of one beneath the other. In both the Himalayas and Caledonides, the collision was accompanied by generation of high and ultra-high pressure complexes and emplacement of hot allochthons.

The Scandinavian Caledonides have the particular advantage of deep erosion to middle and lower crustal levels, providing unique insight into the processes involved in the underthrusting and generation of the high grade rocks.

This project focuses on the Seve Nappe Complex, an assemblage of continental outer margin sedimentary rocks with abundant dolerites and basalts, some gabbros and occasional ultramafic rocks, which was partially subducted during Caledonian orogeny and variously metamorphosed under high and ultra-high pressures, prior to emplacement at least 400 km onto the Baltoscandian platform.
