A PhD position is available starting October 2011 in the group of Dr. Fabian Kloosterman () at the newly established Neuro-Electronics Research Flanders () in Leuven, Belgium.
The Kloosterman Lab studies how neural circuits and systems in the brain process and store information. We focus on the mechanisms underlying the expression of episodic and spatial memories in the medial temporal lobe and their role in guiding behavior. For this, we employ large-scale electrophysiological recordings in behaving rats and mice, perform selective pharmacological and (opto)genetic manipulations, and develop novel recording technologies and analysis methods.
The successful applicant has the opportunity to learn a variety of skills, including rodent neurosurgery, neurophysiology in freely behaving animals and advanced data analysis. The candidate has the opportunity to enroll in the international graduate program at K.U. Leuven.
NERF is an interdisciplinary research center founded by K.U. Leuven, VIB and Imec with the goal to unravel the anatomical and functional fundamentals of neuronal circuits. The center is located at the Imec campus with access to state-of-the art facilities and clean-room infrastructure. NERF offers an international and collaborative environment and an excellent scientific atmosphere.
Profile
Candidates
are expected to have completed a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in an
area relevant to our research goals (e.g. biological, physical or
behavioral sciences). Applicants with backgrounds in engineering,
physics or mathematics and who have strong interests in pursuing
research in systems neuroscience are encouraged to apply.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated and independent, has strong quantitative skills and can work in a team. Prior experience in electrophysiology, animal behavior or signal processing is useful, but not required as long as the candidate is willing to learn these necessary skills.
