PhD Overview

Collaborate with world-class researchers. Engage in a stimulating and supportive intellectual environment. Complete a rigorous, relevant and challenging academic program. These opportunities await you in Memorial University’s PhD in Management.

The program is designed to prepare students for research and teaching careers in academia, as well as for research-oriented positions in industry. The program offers two concentrations: (1) operations and information management; and (2) organizational behaviour and human resources management.

Students complete two years of coursework that exposes them to state-of-the-art research in their selected area of study and prepares them to undertake independent, original research during the dissertation stage.

Program Information

Memorial’s PhD in Management is a four-year full-time program. It is offered by the Faculty of Business Administration and is subject to the regulations of the School of Graduate Studies.

Courses

In the first two years of the program, students will complete a program of courses in research methods and either (1) operations management and information systems or (2) organizational behaviour and human resources management

Summer Research Project

During the first summer of the program, students will complete a research project under the supervision of a faculty member in the area of specialization. Projects will then be presented in a research seminar during the second year of the program.

Comprehensive Exam

By the end of the seventh semester of the program, students will take a written comprehensive exam.

PhD Thesis

All students must submit a thesis proposal by the end of the eighth semester in the program, laying out a program of research that will make an independent and original research contribution. This will be followed by an oral presentation of the proposal. On acceptance, students will complete the research plans outlined in the proposal.

Teaching

Students in the PhD program will be given the opportunity to teach in the third and fourth year of their program.

Student Outcomes

Throughout the program, students will explore new ways of thinking. World-renowned researchers will work with students on research projects of theoretical and practical importance. At the end of the program, graduates will have made a significant contribution to advanced theory and current practice in either:
(1) operations management or information systems, or
(2) organizational behaviour or human resource management.

Financial Assistance and Awards

The Faculty of Business Administration will provide support to all admitted students for a period of four years. The level of support will be competitive with that offered by other Canadian universities, and may consist of a combination of grant, research assistantship, and teaching assistantship. Details of financial support will be included in letters of acceptance.

Fellowship and research grants for advanced study are available, in open competition, from many organizations and foundations. Information about these and other awards is available by contacting the School of Graduate Studies who have a full listing of Scholarships and Awards available for graduate students as well as monthly external scholarship application deadline dates.

Students in the Ph.D. program will be required to teach in the third and fourth year of their program.
