Applications are invited for a three year PhD scholarship in the FEMTO-ST Institute and Laboratory of Mathematics both at Besancon FRANCE.

This Phd thesis will be dedicated to mathematical and numerical contributions in the fast growing area of Multiscale Modelling. More precisely, the candidate will establish a numerical method to implement a Multiscale Model of the wave equation that we have recently introduced. He will also extend the modelling, and the numerical implementation to other equations.

Our model relies on homogenization of the wave equation in a bounded periodic structure. Its presentation, its derivation and its mathematical justification are to be found in [1] and [2] for a short and an extended version respectively. Our technique is new and will lead to highly reduced computation time compared to direct simulation. We quote that there exists a strong need in many scientific and industrial areas to have reduced models for wave propagation phenomena in bounded domains.

The scholarship is valued at about 1225 euros net per month for three years. It will be available from October 1st, 2010. Application to a room on the campus is possible for low rate. Applicants should have a good undergraduate degree and a master in Pure or Applied Mathematics including a good background in Partial Differential Equations.

Closing date for applications: July 1st, 2010.

Please email a CV and a letter outlining your areas of research interest, along with names and contact details of two referees who can comment on your academic suitability to Dr Michel Lenczner (michel.lenczner[ at ]utbm.fr).
