Applications are invited for PhD scholarships at the Centre for Military Studies, Department of Political Science. The scholarships are co-financed by the Centre and the Department. Employment is to begin on 1 May 2011.
The Centre welcomes all applications within security, military strategy and defence studies, but will especially be interested in proposals for research projects within the following areas:
- Effect measurements in military operations
- new concepts of military strategy
- Danish defence policy
- civil-military relations
- defence economics.
Successful applicants will be part of the team of researchers working at the Centre for Military Studies which is a centre at the Department of Political Science committed to researching the strategic choices facing Denmark and other Western societies in a time of change.
Researchers at the Centre are engaged in the public debate on those issues. The Centre has a strong focus on thorough empirical studies as a foundation for theoretical innovation within Strategic Studies. The Centre employs researchers as well as military officers. The Centre is funded by the 2010-14 Defence Bill and conducts research-based studies for the Danish Ministry of Defence and the group of political parties behind the Danish defence budget.
The PhD students will be part of the Copenhagen Graduate School of Social Sciences, University of Copenhagen. The PhD programme provides PhD students with strong research training which opens up a window of opportunity to a variety of careers within the private and public sectors. The programme includes the drafting of a PhD thesis, active participation in research networks, PhD courses, teaching and other forms of knowledge dissemination.
Applications
- The Faculty welcomes applications from all suitably qualified people
regardless of age, gender, race, religion, ethnic background and
citizenship.
- In order to be awarded a PhD scholarship the applicant has to enrol as
a PhD student at the Faculty of Social Sciences, cf. the rules of the
Danish Ministerial Order no. 18 of 14 January 2008.
- An assessment committee will evaluate the applications. When the
assessment committee has finished the evaluation each applicant will
receive the evaluation of his/her application.

Under "Legal basis" you will find information about the rules and
guidelines for the PhD programme and the Danish Ministerial Order on the
PhD programme at the Universities.
The application form contains information about the required enclosures.
Four hard copies of the application must be submitted to the below
address. Masters theses need only be submitted in three copies. The
relevant reference number 211-0124/11-2300 should be written on the
application. Please note that enclosures in the form of
photocopies/paper copies are not returned to the applicants. Only hard
back copies of theses are returned.
Applications must reach the Department no later than 1 April 2011 at 12:00.
Documents received after deadline will not be taken into account.
