Uppsala University hereby declares the following position to be open for application: PhD student in Computerised Image Analysis with focus on Medical Visualization at the Department of Information Technology, Centre for Image Analysis.
The Department of Information Technology has a leading position in research as well as teaching at all levels. The Department has about 200 employees, including 80 senior faculty and 80 PhD students. More than 3000 students are enrolled in one or more courses annually.
The Centre for Image Analysis (CBA) carries out research and graduate education in computerized image analysis and scientific visualization. Focus is on image processing as such, but also on developing better methods, algorithms and systems for applications within primarily biomedicine and forestry.
Description of the subject area: This position will be within the research program Image Analysis and Man-machine Interaction at the Centre for Image Analysis at the Department of Information Technology. The topic of the project involves segmentation and registration in medical volume images, namely CT images of the skull, with the aim to develop a system for craniomaxillofacial surgery planning. In a current project at CBA, we have shows that in interaction with 3D objects, the sense of touch is an essential addition to our visual perception.
Haptic devices can be used to facilitate interaction with 3D virtual objects. Pointing in 3D and grabbing, moving and turning objects is much more natural with a 6 degrees-of-freedom probe than using more conventional 2D interaction devices such as a mouse. The success of this project will come by developing and combining stereographic visualization, volume rendering, haptic rendering, as well as interactive segmentation and registration algorithms.
Qualifications required: The candidate should have a Master of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent, including mathematics and statistics. Experience of digital image analysis, computer graphics, and scientific visualization is desirable, as is experience of system development.
The position is for a maximum of five years and includes departmental duties at a level of at most 20% (typically teaching) as well as course studies. You will be expected to teach in Swedish or English. Excellent skills in spoken and written English are an absolute requirement.
The application should include a description of research interests and past experience, a CV, degrees and grades, a copy of Master thesis (or a draft thereof), relevant publications, and other relevant documents. Candidates are encouraged to include a description of themselves as well as reasons for wanting to become a PhD student. In addition, letter(s) of recommendation and contact information to reference persons, as well as earliest feasible starting date of employment should be provided.
The department is striving to achieve a more equal gender balance and female candidates are particularly invited to apply.
You are welcome to submit your application no later than 5 September, 2011. UFV-PA 2011/2021.
