Historically, academia has perceived America as an exception to the secularization rule that one day religion will be completely marginalized. At the same time Europe was perceived to be the model that all countries in the world would sooner or later imitate.
Based on the historical roots of both the secularization process and the academic theses on secularization, this course examines the role of religion in society today, and the implications of the historical roots on public religion and especially on the contemporary relationship between religion and politics.
