The Baltic States - Issues of Transition and Europeanization

The collapse of the Soviet Empire did not result in the development of new independent states similar with respect to political democracy, market economic, and efficient state administrative structures. Rather, now twenty years after we look at a variety of political systems, varying democratic consolidation, different formation of capitalist economies and degrees of state capacity, as well as direct examples of patronage.

Adding to this, in many states the process of nation building, a clear definition of 'we' and 'the others' are still pending. For this course the three Baltic countries are chosen as a micro-cosmos of post-soviet transitions. Institutional theory, Europeanization and policy transfer will serve as the theoretical base line discussing how institutions and ideas. Department of Political Science and Governance.
