Youth and Substance Use: Social and Psychological Issues and Perspectives

Adolescent drug and alcohol use has in recent years taken up a lot of attention in the public debate. Both politicians and people in general show interest in teenagers' substance use - something that is often depicted as problematic, both for the life of the young person, for his/her family and for society in general. Problematic substance use is often associated with social vulnerability, and marginalization within or even exclusion from central societal contexts, e.g. the education system.

But at the same time, experimenting with substances is to some extend considered important for the social lives of adolescents and for their integration into peer networks, not least by themselves. The field of drug research is diverse, cross-disciplinary and broadly oriented both methodologically and thematically. In this course, focus is on youth and substance use from a social and a psychological perspective. We wish to focus on the concepts of youth and substance use drawing mainly on developmental and social psychological perspectives.
