Erving Goffman was born on June 11th, 1922. He had a son, Tom, with Angelica Choate (who committed suicide in 1964) ans in 1981 he married the Canadian linguist Gillian Sankoff, with whom he had a daughter, Alice. He died of stomach cancer on November 20th, 1982. Goffman was one of the most influential sociologists of the twentieth century, along with Weber, Durkheim, Marx, and Mead, continuing their work in the development of sociological social psychology.
He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Toronto in 1945 and at the University of Chicago he studied both sociology and social anthropology, University that granted his master's degree in 1949 and doctorate in 1953. Goffman spent a year on one of the smaller of the Shetland islands gathering material for his dissertation and his book "The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life" (1959) which is available in at least ten different languages and has been almost continuously in print. Just before his death, Goffman served as president of the American Sociological Association (1981-1982).
