STUDENT LIFE: CHINESE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG
Comenteaza
Founded in 1963 with a mission `to combine tradition with modernity, and to bring together China and the West`, the University has over the past four decades developed into an academic institution of international standing, well-known for its excellence in both teaching and research.
One of the unique features of our University is its collegiate system, which has helped to provide a supportive and nurturing environment for its students. Through a wide range of college activities you can interact closely with your teachers and peers, and bene.t from the pastoral care and whole-person education that our colleges offer. The University believes in `education without borders`, and is home to an increasingly multinational campus community --- its faculty and students hail from 45 countries and regions outside Hong Kong.
Here you learn to live and work in harmony with those who are very different from you. You will develop new ways of looking at things and handling problems and acquire a cosmopolitan outlook. The majority of our academic programmes involve internships in local businesses and exchange opportunities in prestigious institutions overseas.
You will gain immensely from blending workplace experience with academic knowledge, and from exposure to exciting foreign cultures. Generations of CUHK graduates have found that the education they received here has prepared them well for life and work.

The entire collection of the Library System comprises approximately 860,000 volumes of books and bound journals in East Asian languages, 1,180,000 volumes in Western languages. There are more than 30,000 serial titles, including 15,720 active print subscriptions.
Students may borrow books and journals from any of the libraries and search items in the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) of the University Library System. The University Library houses extensive collections in science and engineering, social science and business administration, and each of the branch libraries at the Colleges has some unique features. For example, the Elisabeth Luce Moore Library holds strong collections in education, music and religious studies; the Chaien Mu Library houses good collections in Chinese literature, .ne arts, and philosophy; while the Wu Chung Library is a Multimedia Library. Also located in the Wu Chung Library is the American Studies Resource Library, the nucleus of which is an interdisciplinary resource, donated by the USIS American Library, and a recently-donated William Faulkner Collection. Medical collections are housed in two different locations a pre-clinical materials are housed in the University Library while clinical materials are to be found in the Li Ping Medical Library. The Architecture Library collection covers subjects in the buildings industry and environmental sciences. The Lee Quo Wei Law Library, which is located within the University Library, services legal information. In addition, the University Library System has extensive collections of multimedia materials, micro.lms, 30,000 titles of full-text electronic journals and more than 600 titles of electronic databases. Most of the electronic resources are networked and can be accessed on the World Wide Web or the Library CD-ROM network (CDLAN), via the Campus Network. Services offered by the Library System include circulation, reserve books, inter-library loan, reference enquiry, instructional services, special collections and multimedia services. Library orientation sessions are organized for new students at the beginning of each academic year. Workshops on the use of different library resources are held from time to time. Information guides and news about the Libraries are available at the Library Homepage . The Library Newsletter is also distributed to users via emails.

A Connected Campus
The whole campus, including classrooms, student hostels, teaching blocks, academic and administrative buildings, are connected to the University Campus Backbone Network via high speed Gigabit Ethernet links. Connections within the campus network are 155Mbps or even up to a whopping 1000Mbps.
Wireless Access
Wireless network access is available at college student canteens, major lecture theatres and most outdoor areas on campus. Checking your e-mail, accessing course material or conducting group projects are no longer restricted to a single place.
HKIX
ITSC also plays a crucial part in the provision of Internet services in Hong Kong. ITSC manages both the Hong Kong Internet eXchange (HKIX) and the Hong Kong Internet eXchange 2 (HKIX2), which act as neutral interconnection points for the routing of intra-Hong Kong and intra-Asia-Paci.c Internet traf.c. These Internet eXchanges eliminates the necessity for diverting local network traf.c outside Hong Kong, providing faster and less expensive paths to local sites.
HARNET
The campus network is also linked to the Hong Kong Academic and Research Network (HARNET), a local research network that aims to provide the local academic community with high-speed connectivity to the Internet and the Internet2.

Health Service
The University Health Service provides a comprehensive on-campus medical, dental and
health promotion service to full-time students, staff, and their dependants. We employ seven full-time physicians, .ve dental surgeons and two dental hygienists. The health clinic is equipped with a minor operating theatre, dispensary, medical laboratory and physiotherapy unit, to provide primary medical and dental care services. For the appropriate and more serious medical conditions, referrals to specialists can be arranged. The Health Education Unit organizes regular talks, student activities, awareness campaigns and vaccination programmes, and also advises on the special needs of disabled students.
The Dental Unit provides both preventive and curative services, as well as dental prosthesis.
Appointments can be made via the telephone, the internet or in person. Medical and preventive services are free of charge. The Dental Unit charges a nominal fee.
In case of emergencies, members of the University should seek prompt treatment at the Accident and Emergency Department of Prince of Wales Hospital in Shatin, or at any hospital within the Hospital Authority system.
