Webster University is an American University with a global perspective. It was founded in St. Louis, Missouri(USA) in 1915. The University quickly expanded to an international network of over 100 campuses serving 22,000 students in 7 countries.
Webster students have the opportunity to study at Webster campuses in the USA, Austia, Switzerland, the Netherlands, England, Thailand or the People's Republic of China. Students can change locations throughout their degree programs. The language of instruction in all campuses is English, which not only promotes advanced English skills for native and non-native speakers alike, but also eases the academic and social transition from one country to another.
The Webster campus in Vienna has been providing a high standard of education in Austria for nearly 30 years. It offers students from around the world the opportunity to experience the benefits of an American education in Europe. With students from over 70 countries, and faculty of 20 nationalities, the Vienna campus provides a truly international, intercultural educational setting.
Webster is a liberal arts university that places emphasis on teaching as well as research. The student population is about 500 students. Webster's small class size allows students, faculty and staff to develop relationships on a more personal level and ensures that students don't feel lost in a big, annonymous environment. Students work together on projects and case studies and receive personal attention from faculty and academics advisors while choosing their coursework and areas of study.
One of the unique adavantages of the American system, and Webster University in particular, is the flexibility it offers. Students cand design their own academic programs, working with thei academic advisors to choose courses that suit their personal needs and goals.
The undergraduate degree program consists of three types of courses: major and minor courses, general education courses and elective courses.
- Major and Minors
Every student must choose at least one major, the area of study around which his or her program is built. Majors normally consist of 36 credit hours(12 courses).
Webster Vienna offers majors in: Art(Visual Culture), Business Administration, Information Technology, International Relations, Management, Media Communications and Psychology.
Minors are optional subjects that students can add to their majors with the completion of 18 credits(6 courses).
Webster Vienna offers minors in all major areas, plus the following areas: Art(Studio), Art History, Computer Applications, History, Music, Philosophy, Political Science and Website Design.
- General Education
General education courses are designed to provide the student with the broad base of knowledge necessary to meet the chalanges of contemporany society. Exact requirments can vary according to program, but most students must complete one course in each of the following nine areas of general education: critical thinking, communications, historical consciousness, humanities, values, cultural understanding, arts appreciation, scientific understanding and mathematics.
- Electives
Students take elective courses outside of the major field of study to augment the degree program and to compliment the major. Some students choose to use their electives to pursue a second major, whereas other students explore a range of different subjects with their elevtive courses.
In order to earn a Webster University undergraduate degree, students need to successfully complete 128 credit hours of academic work, which is the equivalent of 43 courses. The program takes 3 to 4 years to complete, depending on the academic background of the applicant.
Admission to Webster University is dependent upon the evaluation of factors such as the applicant's educational background and language skills. A student must have the equivalent of an American high school diploma to apply for admissin to the university. Students must also provide proof of proficiency in English. Each applicant is assigned to an admission officer who can answer questions and provide personal assistance throughout the admissin process.
