AMFC Authorities
The AMFC is managed by the rector and three prorectors: the prorector for scientific and teaching affairs, the prorector for artistic affairs, the prorector for student affairs and for international affairs.
Departments
The AMFC has six departments in Warsaw and one department at the Bialystok Branch. Students can choose one of the following departments: Composition and Theory of Music, Conducting, Instrumental Studies, Vocal Studies, Music Education and Sound Engineering. Master's degrees can be obtained within three different systems of education: day studies, evening studies and extramural studies. They can also be obtained externally. Students may take an individual path of studies in which they follow a separate syllabus approved by the respective Department Councils. They may also take complementary courses in music pedagogy, study at an additional department, or complete an additional speciality or specialisation.
All students must take comprehensive music courses and profiled courses, e.g., aural training, history of music and music literature, music forms, piano, conducting; general courses: foreign language, physical education; humanistic courses: philosophy, aesthetics, history of art, twentieth-century art, film history. All group classes are open. Graduate courses (for a Master's degree) last five years. Candidates for the Master's degree must give an artistic presentation (artistic performance, composition, recording), submit a theoretical dissertation in writing and pass an oral examination. About 100 students graduate from the AMFC each year. Currently about 600 students are studying at the AMFC.
The Home of the Bialystok Branch
Graduates of music academies in Poland and abroad may attend postgraduate master courses at the AMFC. The AMFC has special authorisation to conduct examinations for first and second level artistic degrees (the equivalents of doctoral and post-doctoral degrees respectively) in the following disciplines: conducting, composition, instrumental studies, vocal studies, music education (management of vocal-instrumental ensembles) and sound engineering. It is also entitled to grant the title of professor of music.
The structure of the Academy
Training at the different departments is rooted in the Academy's tradition and evolving structure. Hence some departments concentrate on one area of music only (Departments II-VI) whereas others combine several different areas (Department I, Bialystok Branch). Also some areas may be studied at several different departments (e.g., instrumental studies may be pursued at Departments II and III and the Bialystok Branch).
