IADE - Instituto de Artes Visuais, Design e Marketing (Visual Arts, Design and Marketing Institute) - was founded in 1969 by Antnio Quadros, a portuguese philosopher and writer.
In 1993 IADE created two high education schools: the Design School and the Marketing and Advertising School, establishing three branches of Design Courses at university level: Industrial, Visual and Interior Design and two branches in Marketing and Advertising. At the same time, IADE continues to develop the spirit of a free academy, lecturing non-graduation courses like Photography, History of Cinema, Video, Painting, etc.
The integration into the portuguese university system led to new requirements, such as the reinforcement of research and development, leading to the organisation of international congresses, publication of scientific papers and the creation of post-graduation courses.
IADE maintained its position as a reference regarding design and marketing education. Although based in Lisbon, in the Pombal Palace situated in Chiado, and in a modern building in Avenida D. Carlos, near the river Tejo, IADE attract students from all over the country.
At the moment, IADE has 2000 students in high education courses, 1200 in Design and 800 in Marketing and Advertising.
At Post-Graduation Education Level IADE offer two Masters Courses: Design and Visual Culture (M.Phil) and Semiotics (M.Phil), also there are post-graduation courses in Cartoon and Illustration, Photography Studies, Communication and Image, Marketing and Communication and Art and Design Critics.
Since 2004, the Design School has also high education level course in Visual Culture.
We are also developing the school's internationalisation, particularly through the European Program Socrates/Erasmus, as an integrating mode of this entire process.
The international dimension, in particular the European dimension, has become one of quality's main criteria in education at university level and is part of today's institutional development's strategic management.
The international dimension and, in particular, the European dimension, has become one of the key criteria of quality of Higher Education and it is currently part of the strategic management of development.
The importance IADE attaches to scientific and academic internationalization rests on the belief that the dialogue between all the participants in this implementation process of the "Union of Knowledge" is an indispensable tool for the construction of a united and competitive Europe in a global context. The DRI - Department for International Relations - born in 2000 to implement the planning and the management of cooperation in the area of Higher Education has been developing and strengthening the external relations of IADE by establishing important partnerships with universities and associations connected with Higher Education, playing an active role in implementing teachers and students exchanges (particularly within the European program Socrates-Erasmus), participating in conferences and other international events promoted by bodies of which it is a fellow member, finding partners for research projects and their publication, and to achieve this IADE has partnerships with universities in Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Spain, The Netherlands, Switzerland.
