The International Business School "Kelajak Ilmi" (IBS) at Tashkent State University of Economics (TSUE) was founded in 1991 by professors from TSEU, the University of Arkansas (USA) and the Republic of Uzbekistan's Ministry of Higher and Secondary Education. In 1991, twenty students were selected by the professors from Arkansas to continue their education in the U.S. The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Islam Karimov, sponsored these 20 students. Of the students who graduated between 1991-1997 many went on to continue their education at universities in the US and the UK. More than 40 of them passed the ACCELS (American Council for Collaboration in Education and Language Studies) programs. 42 students have received bachelor's degrees and 20 have earned master's degrees. Originally, the IBS offered a one-year business program that developed basic accounting and English language skills. As Uzbekistan began its transition to a "market economy ", the demand for business professionals with knowledge of international accounting standards and English increased, and a two-year Accounting program was established with the assistance of professors from Nottingham Trent University (UK). In 1995, the European Union TACIS supported the IBS in developing the "Manager's Assistant" and "Municipal Management" programs. As more multinational companies established a presence in Uzbekistan and looked to the local workforce to fill new jobs, the IBS recognized the need for a higher-level program reflecting the needs of these organizations. In 1997, the IBS launched a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) program, based on American curricula. The IBS' new four-year program gives its graduates the skills necessary to compete in a market economy and to help develop the economy of Uzbekistan. In June 2001, the first group to complete the four-year BBA program graduated. Today, IBS graduates are employed by many foreign companies and organizations in Uzbekistan, such as BAT Uzbekistan, KPMG, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Coca-Cola, ABN AMRO Bank, Phillips, the British Council, the U.S. Embassy and others.
