    Programme Description

The Art major with an emphasis in Visual Culture is a comprehensive art education, combining courses in art history, art theory and criticism, art production and art promotion with an opportunity to obtain professional experience. Images are instrumental in shaping our collective and individual conceptions of reality. The field of Visual Culture investigates not only the past and its visual output in the field of high art, but looks also at contemporary visual phenomena, the social and political use of images, and the cultural practices that emerge from the use of these images. The Visual Culture approach assumes that art interpretation is not viewed as mere perception, but as a production of meaning depending upon the viewpoint of the beholder in terms of class, gender and cultural background.

Students will be trained to use visual codes effectively, to participate in discourses on art, to understand the mechanisms of the art market and to develop strategies for art promotion. Graduates have the tools to move easily beyond the confines of one career area into a cluster of related careers such as curating, consulting, art criticism, art promotion and sales, or art education in museums, galleries or other cultural institutions.
