    Programme Description

    The interdisciplinary program `Advanced Materials Science´ offers to excellent students with degrees in chemistry, physics, or materials sciences a multi-faceted training in the topical field of advanced materials, covering the range from nanoparticles to macroscopic matter. The program features small classes, intensive tutoring, project work, presentations by renowned international guest speakers, a spring school, and extensive practical training at leading industrial R&D units and production sites. The program is completed with a Master´s Thesis. Through an efficient use of the term breaks the master program is condensed from four to three semesters and enriched by training in complementary key qualifications.

    The programme is jointly offered jointly by Ludwig-Maximilians-Univeristy Munich (LMU), Munich University of Technology and the University of Ausburg. All three Universities are integrated in the program and each of the three semesters is spend at one of the mentioned Universities whereas the LMU is the speaker University.

    Due to a strict limitation of the number of participating students, it is assured that the selected students are provided with the best possible education in the field of materials and nanotechnology.

    Through an efficient use of the semester-breaks, the teaching program is condensed from four to three semesters and enriched by training in complementary key qualifications. Courses, lectures and training will be graded using the European credit point system.
    Apart from lectures and the Master´s Thesis, the program involves intense tutoring, project work, presentations by renowned international guest speakers, a spring school, and extensive industrial training at leading industrial R&D units and production sites.

    Self studies and Tutoring

    The low student-to-faculty ratio ensures individual attention to all students. Due to the condensed curriculum and the varied educational background of the students in the AMS program, a full commitment to self-studies is also required.

    Project work

    Students can choose among a wide selection of faculty-mentored research projects and thereby reinforce experimental and theoretical knowledge in one of their fields of interest.

    Industrial Training

    The study program is complemented by industrial training that takes up to 8 weeks and is mentored by researchers in the companies involved. This training is designed to provide students with insights into working processes in companies and materials science as applied to product development.

    Spring School

    The lectures include training in concepts of management, marketing, and social competencies. The spring school is organised in close cooperation with the centre for entrepreneurship of the Technische Universität München, UnternehmerTUM GmbH.

    Master Thesis and Degree

    After having passed the exams during the first year, the students complete the program with a Master´s Thesis (6 months) covering a research area being represented by the faculty of the AMS program.
