University: Åbo Akademi University (Department of Information Technologies)

Partners: Turku Centre for Computer Science, Nordic Master School in Innovative ICT

The Master’s Degree Programme in Electronic and Mobile Commerce (EMC) offered by the Department of Information Technologies at Åbo Akademi University is a comprehensive and up-to-date programme with the latest research knowledge in information systems in general, and electronic and mobile commerce in particular. The studies encompass many aspects of the Information Systems industry and the multifaceted and dynamically growing environment in which it operates. The studies combine subject areas in business economics and management science with mobile services design and e-commerce theory and practise.

Students of the programme will acquire knowledge and professional skills in planning, developing, building, and implementing electronic and mobile commerce products and services, and solutions for successful business operations. The Master’s degree programme builds on research at the Institute for Advanced Management Systems Research (IAMSR). IAMSR is a research institute that carries out its research programme in interaction with the Finnish industry. The research programme on mobile commerce and mobile value services has been running since 1999 and now builds on cooperation both with a dozen Finnish companies and a network of research groups at TU Delft in the Netherlands, University of Trento in Italy and City University Hong Kong.

An international group of doctoral students works with research projects on mobile value services. When graduating from the EMC programme, the student has both an academic master’s degree and experience of building and introducing information systems, a combination that has great demand in multinational corporations worldwide. A successful completion of this two-year full-time programme results in the award of a Master of Science in Business Administration degree. The programme provides an excellent basis for a management and business career in the modern digital economy.

    Career prospects

The EMC programme provides an excellent basis for a management and business career in the modern digital economy. A graduate from the EMC program typically gets the first employment in a project aimed at adapting the operations of a company to the digital economy and will then be promoted to head development projects and teams in companies building an electronic and mobile commerce business. The next step is typically responsibility for profit centres and strategic business units to be followed by executive positions in the marketing or sales organizations and a position as CEO.

Nordic Master School in Innovative ICT

Master’s Degree Programme in Electronic and Mobile Commerce is part of Nordic Master School in Innovative ICT. NMS iICT is one of the pilot projects awarded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and based on joint development of existing Master Programmes (120 sp) at the partner universities, which are Åbo Akademi University, University of Turku, The Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Technical University of Denmark (Denmark) and Tallinn University of Technology (Estonia). NMS iICT focuses on combining and coordinating world-leading Nordic ICT – related education of the partner universities.

The NMS iICT curricula also are to equip the students with basic skills and tools in innovation and entrepreneurship.

The student of Master’s Degree Programme in Electronic and Mobile Commerce can decide her-/himself whether or not s/he wants to participate in Nordic Master School. In order to become a NMS iICT student, the Innovation and Entrepreneurship -module is an obligatory part of studies. The module is designed especially for students with technical background, taking into consideration their specific needs and interest in the I&E studies – when involved in the business world, it is not sufficient to know the technology, but also the mechanisms how the business works with technology.

The I&E module is, of course, worthwhile for students intending to graduate for commercial world, but also people in the academic world will get an advantage from the module, as more and more of the scientific research is funded by the corporate world. These studies are part of optional studies and form a minor subject (25 sp). The Innovation and Entrepreneurship –module is described at the end of this section. In addition to the I&E studies, the student can choose to carry out part of her/his major studies in one of the partner universities. Every university offers Core Competence -modules (30 sp), which are based on their special field of know-how. The student can choose one or two of these Core Competence –modules according to her/his personal study plan. Mobility is not a compulsory part of studies, but highly recommended.
