    Programme Description

The University of Essex is one of the UK's leading academic institutions, ranked ninth nationally for research excellence following the last Research Assessment Exercise (RAE).

The Department of Language and Linguistics was ranked fourth in the UK following the last RAE and is one of the largest and most prestigious departments of its kind in the UK.

This course, the first of its kind to be offered within the UK, is designed to address ever expanding interest, from around the world, in the teaching of English as a second or foreign language to young (pre-school and primary level) children. This means it is timely to offer such a course dedicated to the teaching of ESOL to such young learners, and to prepare students to undertake much-needed research in this area.

Core topics covered include psychological foundations of child development, syllabuses, materials and methods specifically for young learners, primary level literacy and research methods in the young learners' classroom.
