    Programme Description

During the autumn of 2005, the first students were enrolled for a new Masters Programme in Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Iceland. This is a cross-disciplinary degree programme, providing academic insight into the various aspects of environmental issues and the utilisation of natural resources. The degree course is organised by six of the University´s faculties: Social Sciences, Humanities, Law, Science, Engineering, and Economics & Business Administration. A special board, acting on behalf of these faculties, supervises the programme and is responsible for its academic organisation and content.

    Goals

This Masters programme is designed to meet the needs of the society for increased levels of environmental research which is necessary for the successful tackling of environmental problems and the planning of sustainable resource use. The overall goal is to assemble and disseminate cross-disciplinary knowledge in the fields of environmental science and natural resource management. Such knowledge will:
lead to better analysis and understanding of the causes and consequences of the major environmental problems of our time, which is a prerequisite for identifying appropriate solutions, and contribute to a sustainable use of natural resources, taking nature, economy and social issues into account.

Students are registered at the department where their main supervisor is located and graduate from that department with a Masters degree (M.S. or M.A.) in Environment and Natural Resources.
