    Programme Description

This programme is for dentists who want to move into a senior professional role or take up an advanced teaching or research position in academia. The programme combines academic and clinical training with a structured, independent research project and complies with the UK standards for specialist training in orthodontics set by the Orthodontic Standing Advisory Committee of the Royal Colleges.

The taught element of the programme consists of mandatory clinical training, including clinical practice on patients, and a seminar programme that covers nine academic themes: basic orthodontic subjects; general orthodontic subjects; orthodontic techniques; biological sciences relevant to orthodontics; multidisciplinary treatment procedures; specific treatment procedures; information technology; management of oral health; and the practice and business of specialist orthodontic practice. You also undertake workshops in research methods and research management and receive help and advice from your supervisory team.

The research project is spread across the duration of the programme. During year one, the research project aims, literature review and pilot studies must be completed. Practical work may be spread across the duration of the programme and writing-up must be completed for submission of the thesis at the conclusion of the programme.
