    Programme Description

Supported by Rolls-Royce a studentship of up to £17,000 p.a. for three years plus fees* is available

Cranfield University, in collaboration with Rolls-Royce, has an exciting research opportunity for a motivated graduate, to undertake important research in the area of service cost modelling.

The transition from pure product design and supply to a service industry mentality is one of the major paradigm shifts taking place within key sectors of British industry. Rolls-Royce Group plc is universally acknowledged as one of the leading exponents of this with its industry leading application of `Total Care´ contracts for civil aviation power-plants.

Manufacturing, servicing and supporting gas turbine based products is a main revenue earner for Roll-Royce, with over half this total revenue generated from the provision of aftermarket services, also known as `Total Care Service Packages.´ This service is contracted at a fixed cost for a set number of years. Predicting the cost of the service is a core capability required to achieve competitiveness in the global market. This project aims to develop a parametric cost model for services and involves modelling mechanical and chemical degradation for life prediction of aero-engine components.

The successful candidate will be exposed to the business imperatives of service provision cost control in addition to the details of the key processes that support the service delivery from design through to service issue management. This project will build on Cranfield University´s existing world class research in Cost Engineering and Product-Service Systems (PSS). The researcher will work as part of an active research environment within Cranfield´s Manufacturing Department and will be mostly based at Rolls-Royce offices in Derby.

The skills and business acumen developed during this programme will be highly transferrable between industrial sectors and will make the researcher a high quality candidate for employment within the manufacturing sector.
