    Cranfield Universitys innovative Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) Centre has an exciting research opportunity for a motivated graduate. This research aims to create a hybrid prognostics method by integrating two main physics based and data driven approaches with capability and requirements analysis.

    These two main approaches to prognostic methods each have advantages and disadvantages. Physics based methods have the potential to be developed by domain experts without needing data to characterize failure progression. However, they can be expensive and difficult to create, especially for complex systems. On the other hand, data driven models are easier to build and do not require domain experts. However, these models require data that represents the full failure progression, which is often not possible. This project will focus on developing a hybrid model that integrates the data driven and physics based models to enable effective and applicable prognostics. A simple electro-mechanical example will be selected for the application.

    Based within the IVHM centre on Cranfield Bedfordshire campus the successful students will have access to state-of-the-art electronics lab, prognostics lab and simulation lab. IVHM Centre is supported by industrial partners Alstom, BAE Systems, Boeing, Meggitt, Rolls-Royce, and Thales.
