The principal research areas of the Department of Philosophy are:
* Philosophy of Science, Mathematics, and Logic
* Philosophy of Mind, Psychology, and Epistemology
* Moral and Political Philosophy
With 14 permanent members of staff, we are larger than many philosophy departments in the UK. Individual members of staff have been highly successful in attracting external and internal research awards, including three Philip Leverhulme Prizes, five AHRC Research Leave Awards, one Mind Association Research Fellowship, and two Bristol University Research Fellowships. We hold a variety of regular research seminars and conferences.
The Department hosts the highly regarded British Journal for the Philosophy of Science. In addition to the weekly departmental research seminars, there are regular seminars in philosophy and history of science, incorporating joint seminars with the Physics, Psychology and Mathematics Departments.
