Opening up the fascinating world of Ancient Greek to those who haven%E2%80%99t yet had the opportunity, this intensive course is ideal for those keen to find out more about a language and culture that underpins so much in modern life.As well as those hoping to gain a head start in the essential research skills for future study including a Masters or Doctoral degree, this course offers the opportunity for all backgrounds and levels of education to develop their Greek and knowledge of the Hellenic world.Offered as two individual sessions or as a combined six week course, the course will guide you from complete beginner to confidently translating straightforward English text into Greek alongside the ability to read basic Greek texts.In this supportive and friendly learning environment, you%E2%80%99ll not only be closely involved in daily language classes and private study using the JACT Reading Greek course, but you%E2%80%99ll also gain valuable additional insight with talks from expert guest lecturers, trips to the British Museum or Museum of London, and even workshops giving you a valuable insight into skills like papyrology and epigraphy.You will work through the first half of the JACT Reading Greek course in daily language classes and will be expected to put in a number of hours of private study. Staff will be on hand to offer private tutorials and surgery hours, as required. There will be one main in-class test at the end of the course, and two smaller progress tests to provide concrete learning targets.The JACT course offers the opportunity to learn and practise new grammatical points in exercises, alongside acquiring valuable reading skills. A wide range of Greek texts are available which become increasingly unadapted as the course progresses.

Target group
This course is suitable for students who intend to study for a Masters or Doctoral degree who have not yet had the opportunity to acquire Greek. School teachers could use this course to acquire enough expertise in Greek to offer basic classes in addition to Latin and/or Classical Civilisation. It is also appropriate for undergraduates, mature students and anyone with an interest in the Hellenic world.

Course aim
On completion of this module, you will be able to recognise, explain and use the basic principles of Greek grammar; to translate simple sentences from Greek to English, and English to Greek; and to read adapted texts by Greek authors.
