Anne Frank in Amsterdam and Beyond

The Diary of Anne Frank is the most famous book ever written in Amsterdam. Composed during World War II in her place of hiding, the young Jewish woman%E2%80%99s diary became an enormous posthumous bestseller after the war. In this course you explore why and how the book became so successful all around the world, focusing especially on how Anne%E2%80%99s story has been retold in different media over the seventy years since it was first published. By studying the many adaptations, you gain an in-depth knowledge of the Holocaust and the Second World War in Europe, and how those events have been remembered in cultural memory %E2%80" especially in the Netherlands and the United States.

Students from the disciplines of Humanities (Literature, History, Film Studies) and Social Sciences (including Criminal Justice and Jewish Studies)

Course aim
This course teaches you how to analyse visual texts in comparison to written ones. You select your own individual project related to the story of Anne Frank, and present and write about this in English. You also gain some background knowledge of the Second World War and visit historical sites, including Anne's hiding place now a museum.

EUR 950: Includes orientation and course material. Does not include housing.

Scholarships
The Amsterdam Summer School offers twenty scholarships of 500 for highly motivated students. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is 1 April. Application for the scholarship is part of the general online application procedure.
