Art and the City
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
Art and design play a major role in the growing interurban competition that is shaping the global scenario today. This course will focus on a variety of subjects dealing with art in contemporary cities, the notion of Richard Florida%C2%B4s creative class, UNESCO design cities, the role of public art and more. These subjects embrace different artists, cultures and cities. The topic of the roll of monuments in public space is addressed as well. Within the course we will visit various cities like: Auckland (also meet Maori culture and architecture), Beijing and Las Vegas. Then, we will be back to Europe and visit Berlin, Graz (we will have a day trip to Graz) and Belgrade. As the central dimension of the course is to provide an opportunity for students to develop their own opinion about the role of art in contemporary cities, they will be also asked to answer the question if art can save the city and what can art change in the city, as we often hear today expressions like creative cities, design cities, art and the cities. The course will combine lectures, excursions, slideshows and discussions. Students will be asked to develop and produce a small-scale art/architecture public intervention/solution/transformation in Vienna. For each student, the selection of themes, locations and media is open-ended. For this project a wide range of media techniques will be encouraged including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, or text.We will also discuss the work of Christo & Jeanne Claude, Richard Serra, Maya Lin, Dani Karavan, Vito Acconci, Gordon Matta Clark, Anarchitecture group, Ant Farm, Robert Smithson, Erwin Wurm, Archigram, Haus-Rucker-Co, Dan Graham, Donald Judd, Dan Flavin, Rachel Whiteread, Claes Oldenburg, Hundertwasser, Googie architecture, Jonathan Borofsky, Eduardo Chillada, Peter Kogler and more. The guest lecturers are Dr. Karl Stocker (FH Joanneum, Graz), Head of the Department of Exhibition Design and Information Design at the University of Applied Sciences Graz who will talk about Graz Unesco City of Design; Yael Sheril, Berlin based Art director and Co-founder of the B_Tour (Berlin%C2%B4s alternative public art festival), who will introduce participants to a new form of public art interventions and talk about the festival and Christina T%C3%B6pfer, Graz based Editor for Camera Austria International and Curator at GrazMuseum who will talk about Las Vegas.
