The world is full of sounds, some big but many of them tiny, that we just need to focus our ears to appreciate. The sound of a coffee pot, a tram passing, even snow falling, can be a revelation if we just listen carefully. Sound hunting is a pastime that anyone can enjoy. As part of this course, participants will each be given a professional quality digital recorder, stereo microphone and headphones, instruction, and then the opportunity to explore and capture the world of sounds in the natural environment around campus as well as some special architectural structures nearby. We%E2%80%99ll learn how to use powerful audio software tools and even write our own applications using the MAX programming language. The goal is for each participant to create their own short composition based entirely on their captured sounds. The course will also introduce a number of important artists who work with field recordings such as Luc Ferrari, Alvin Lucier and Mark Ainger, instrument designers (Hans Reichl, Harry Partch) and innovative musicians from the US, Europe and Asia.
