This is a nine-part course which explains the history of the Mediterranean region through the focal point of Barcelona. The course offers a multidisciplinary and transnational approach to understanding social, cultural, economic and political life in the Mediterranean region in the Early Modern period, emphasizing the importance of the movement and exchange of people, objects, ideas and practices in determining the course of history. The course structure is designed to reflect the dynamic character of Barcelona as a centre of exchange in the Mediterranean region from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. Most of the historical sites, which include several of the Barcelona%E2%80%99s hidden treasure from the early modern age, including the Consolat del Mar, Palau Requesens (the Academy of Fine Arts), and the Real Acad%C3%A8mia de Medicina, will be studied on site through lectures and field work. In addition to on-site visits, the course will include sightseeing tours of Barcelona%E2%80%99s old town to explore urban spaces dating from the early modern age that were used by part of society for social interaction, royal ceremonies, other official ceremonies, and prosecutions. The aim of the on-site lectures is to encourage students to develop their own point of view, based on direct observation of the historical sites. The course will be organized in three-part classes lasting three-and-a-half hours, with the exception of the opening and final sessions, these will consist of a one-hour lecture, an hour%E2%80%99s group discussion based on the course texts that students will receive in advance, and a one-and-a-half-hour visit. An online forum will be opened after each session for group discussion and participation. No final examination is required, but the overall assessment will take into account each student%E2%80%99s participation in class and in the online forums.
