Berlin's Landscape of Monuments: Communicative Concepts of the Public Memory
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
In this seminar we will systematically investigate communicative and artistic concepts of selected memorial sites by comparing them with one another and analysing their modes of action. Additionally we will classify these concepts historically and try to examine their transferability with regard to other contexts.A peculiar progression of history: In recent decades the country of perpetrators has become a country with a highly differentiated culture of remembrance considered with much interest and respect in other countries. Most interesting are those public memorials and places of remembrance, which distinguish themselves via their comparably unconventional formal concepts by which a sustainable reflection on historical events is to be induced. There are quite a few more recent and historical memorials and monuments within the inner part of the city of Berlin, which, in manifold ways, invoke public remembrance regarding diverse topics. In this seminar we will systematically investigate communicative and artistic concepts of selected memorial sites by comparing them with one another and analyzing their modes of action. Additionally we will classify these concepts historically and try to examine their transferability with regard to other contexts. The focus of the seminar will be on monuments and memorials that deal predominantly with the years 1933-1945 as well as the post-war period. The goal of the course is to give participants an overview of the current discourse on public culture of remembrance.
