This module that is developed and given in partnership with the University for Peace The Hague aims at introducing to you the role and responsibility of businesses in contributing to lasting peace in conflict affected areas.To achieve such an ambitious goal, you will be introduced to conflict analysis from an economic perspective, the role businesses play in today%E2%80%99s world and the responsibility they hold vis a vis the overall society, the environment and the local economy. In particular a review of the principles of responsible investment will be carried out, besides the introduction to CSR, when looking at those companies investing in war torn societies as well as developing countries. Understanding the impacts of businesses in a specific context and their relationship with different stakeholders will help you in identifying the challenges as well as opportunities of businesses in nurturing peace.You will have the possibility of interacting with guest speakers from an international development organisation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and others and to visit a multinational company and different organisations in The Hague to learn how the principles of responsible businesses work in practice.At the end of the module, you will present your %E2%80%98business for peace%E2%80%99 in a specific pre-selected conflicts, where you put an emphasis on the role businesses could play in contributing to peace.You will be guided by the following questionsHow can we analyse conflicts from an economic perspective?What%E2%80%99s the role and responsibility of businesses in today%E2%80%99s worldWho are the stakeholders in a conflict affected area? How can we analyse and engage them to build peaceHow do local businesses put the principles of responsible business in practice? Thus contributing to peace

Target group
The program is open to anyone who has completed their high school diploma (or equivalent) and has completed at least their first year bachelor degree level education. Applicants whose native tongue is not English, should have a good knowledge of the English language (Level B2 or higher). The Hague Summer School reserves the right to determine if applicants English language level is appropriate.

Course aim
At the end of the course you will be able to:Analyze conflicts from an economic perspective Develop insights and the ability to reflect on the roles and responsibilities of businessUnderstand and apply a stakeholder analysis from a business perspective in a specific (post-)conflict area.Discuss and explain own point of view on responsible businessIdentifying the challenges as well as opportunities of businesses in nurturing peace.

Credits info
4 ECTS The Hague Summer School are assigned ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). The amount of credits for each course depends on whether you choose the two or four week program. The two week program is worth 4 ECTS. It consists of a general module worth 1 ECTS and an elective module worth 3 ECTS. The four week program is worth 8 ECTS. It contains two general modules worth 2 ECTS and two elective modules worth 6 ECTS. Detailed program descriptions and outlines will be provided to the students to facilitate the credit transfer.
