Business and Human Rights. The course will cover the forging of a global framework to address the challenges created by current globalization model and reduce corporate-related human rights harm. The review of the initiative to provide a philosophy, policy and program to address the root causes of human rights due to corporations operations in communities and countries. The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights aim to address the gap in promotion and protection of human rights people face due to the practices of corporations. The principled pragmatic principles offer a framework to guarantee fundamental freedoms based on agreed upon articles enshrining the model to protect, respect and remedy. The course will clarify the roles of states and businesses to safeguard these rights. The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights provides a roadmap for responsible global corporate practices and country responses to protect the human rights of its citizens. Participants will learn about the ripening of rights in the current campaigns regarding Business and Human Rights exploring the best means of engagement to realize rights for the impacted individuals in the UN Human Rights Council currently taking place. Significant study will cover the creation of National Action Plans under the auspices of the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights and the implementation of these international standards in specific state and corporation policies and practices. The course will cover the foundational and operational principles of the state duty to protect human rights, the corporate responsibility to respect human rights and access to remedy.The interactive discussion is rooted in direct experience of the instructor in the actual negotiations of the precursor to the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, the UN Sub-commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights Draft Norms on Responsibilities of Transnational Corporations & Other Business Enterprises with Regard to Human Rights. The course will also build upon consultations with the principal architect of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights prior to its adoption at the UN Human Rights Council. as well as negotiations for followup mechanisms such as the UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights and the Forum on Business and Human Rights. The course will share insights into the actual session of the three initial session of the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights and the negotiations leading up to the adoption of a UN Human Rights Council resolution 26/9, Elaboration of an internationally legally binding instrument on transnational corporations and other business enterprises with respect to human rights. The course will include visits to multinational corporations leading the competition to respect human rights as well as visits to fair trade campaigns to ensure consumer purchasing power that expresses solidarity with suppliers. There will also be vista to NGOs operating in Vienna to ensure the Guiding Principles don't remain words on paper but a work plan for countries, corporations and communities to guarantee promotion and proaction of human rights.

3 ECTS Participants will receive a certificate of participation at the end of the summer school and all necessary documentation to validate the course at their home university.
