Coastal Meteorology and Oceanography Summer School
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
The Ocean Campus - Coastal Meteorology and Oceanography Summer School takes advantage of the location of Lisbon, very close to an eastern boundary current system, where, in summer, several typical atmospheric and oceanographic coastal processes occur. The possibility of gathering students and scientists with a common interest in coastal processes at the Portuguese Naval Academy, with access to meteorological and oceanographic instrumentation, and with a rapid access to the ocean and to ship time is also rather unique. The Summer School has as a goal to provide to a group of up to 44 postgraduate students, and postdocs, a detailed view about atmospheric, oceanic, and land processes in coastal regions, with a hands-on approach to point observations. The programme includes a 5 days intensive training period (6-10 July) with courses by a diverse set of international lecturers, that intend to cover a broad spectrum of coastal atmospheric and oceanic issues, and foster cross-disciplinary links between them. The training period will be followed by a three-day ship expedition to the Berlengas Islands (11-13 July), 80 nautical miles North of Lisbon, on the tall-ship Creoula. The ship-cruise will have a continuous observational program, including atmosphere and ocean soundings, geological and biological sampling in the water column, and sediments retrieval. Basic sea training will also be provided, with the students being included in the ships activities.
