Creative writing embraces a wide range of genres, from fiction to non-fiction, including the novel, the short story, poetry, drama and screen-writing, and various forms of writing such as crime, travel and biographies. Creative writing includes all writing that is original, innovative and imaginative. It can be what you do for your own pleasure or as your career.This course will help you get started as a writer, or develop as a writer, by enabling you to improve your existing skills and cultivate your imagination. It will guide you through the process of writing, from brainstorming to writing to revising.This course provides students with appropriate creative, critical and practical skills for resolving literary and professional tasks within the field of fiction, with an emphasis on dramatic narrative. It aims to prepare them for the professional writing life, mixing literary theory, critical concepts and craft knowledge with practical advice. It works through a series of mini-lectures by the tutor, student presentations and interactions, alongside study of excerpts from novels and other critical, creative and professional texts such as essays, book blurbs, publishing contracts, etc. On occasion writing exercises and students%E2%80%99 own creative work may be brought in aid. The course contains some aspects of a traditional theory of the novel course but challenges the assumptions of these in a way that is closer to the uncertain processes actually involved in writing a novel.

Course leader
The course is led by Giles Foden. Giles Foden was born in Warwickshire in 1967 but grew up mostly in Africa. He was Harper-Wood Student in Creative Writing at St John's College, Cambridge 1989-90. In 1993 he became assistant editor of the Times Literary

Target group
This summer course is suitable for all people who are interested in creative writing. During the course you will be expected to attend workshops and seminars, submit your work for peer review and create a portfolio of your own writing. The expected English language proficiency is C1 or equivalent (advanced proficiency).

Course aim
It aims to prepare the students for the professional writing life, mixing literary theory, critical concepts and craft knowledge with practical advice.
