Deaf Studies (sign language and English)
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
The summer school in Deaf Studies is in many ways a unique event. It is, as far as we know, the first course in Europe taught by an all-Deaf crew, and taught in sign language. It is taught in International Sign, with simultaneous interpretation to English. Thus, both Deaf and hearing students are welcome.Deaf communities are a special minority group. This course deals with social, political, anthropological and linguistic aspects of this minority characterized by dynamic developments. In Denmark, for instance, it was not earlier than 2014 that Danish Sign Language language was officially recognized. During the course, special attention will be given to questions of identity, equality and the status of their languages, through a study of language policies. Special attention will be given to empowerment and emancipation processes of the Deaf. deaf people and deaf communities.During the course, experiences of equality and their application to the Deaf communities, including state policies, will be discussed. The exciting new field of Deaf identity dynamics and emancipation processes in different contexts around the world is another topic. Sign languages of the Deaf are not always recognized, and analysis and comparison of state policies handling statuses for signed languages are also dealt with. Furthermore, power relations and discursive practices within the Deaf communities and between Deaf Communities and mainstream societies, including multilingualism and multiculturalism, Deaf identity, and perspectives of sustainability empowerment, and emancipation are part of the course. All these issues raise professional, social and ethical implications of applying such knowledge and judgements to issues affecting the Deaf communities. The teachers have experience with Deaf communities in countries as varied as Belgium, Ireland, Finland and Uganda. Goedele De Clerck is an anthropologist/social and political scientist connected to the University of Ghent University. John Conama is a social scientist who has a doctorate in Equality Studies from Dublin. Both of them have also worked on sign language recognition, policies and/or the documentation of sign languages and Deaf communities description. Paddy Ladd, the scholar from the UK who developed the concept of Deafhood, has been invited for a special guest lecture. This interdisciplinary course will especially be interesting for students of anthropology, social sciences, sociolinguistics, educational sciences, sign languages and political science, as well as members of the Deaf community and Deaf professionals.
