Dealing With Cultural Diversity: Theory and Practice

This course is about globalization, migration, and internationalization. What does psychology have to say about societies that become more multicultural, international students, and diverse teams in organizations and at the workplace? How can psychology contribute to make organizations and societies more inclusive?The course introduces theoretical insights (part 1), offers practical modules (part 2), and concludes with an empirical interview assignment (part 3) to tackle these questions.Part 1: Theoretical Modules- Introduction to the Course and Overview- Basic Concepts and Methods in Cross-Cultural Psychology- Critical Thinking- Introduction: Intercultural Communication and Competence- Social Perception and Cognition / Video Documentary: The Eye of the Storm / La Lecon Discrimination / Het Grote - Racisme Experiment- Stereotypes- Emotions- Acculturation, Biculturalism, Multiculturalism- Social Identity and Ethnic Identity- Bias and Equivalence %E2%80" Methodological Pitfalls- Social Interaction & Working Together - The Multicultural Work PlacePart 2: Practical Modules- Four roleplaying games (each one afternoon, 3h)- One cultural assimilator exercise with subsequent construction of training materials (3-4h)- One workshop on "Getting to know another culture: Cultivating Curiosity and Cognitive Flexibility; How Active Global Citizen's thrive or survive in a (not-so) Global World", conducted by guest speaker Caecilia van Peski.Part 3: Empirical Interview Assignment- Conduct a qualitative interview with an informant from another culture on a topic of your choice.- Two preparatory sessions on interview techniques, appropriate research questions, and communication skills- One session for disseminating the findings of each study (presentations in mini-conference, with Q&A)- Submission of report, including extensive expert feedback.Final Assessment:- Students write a report on the empirical interview assignment that they have conducted.- This report will be graded in three domains: (1) theoretical introduction and research question, (2) methods and procedure (3) interpretation of findings and connection with literature.- You will be graded on a 10 point grading scheme (with 10 being best). Course certificates are associated with passing grades (>5.5).

Course aim
After completing the course 'Dealing with Cultural Diversity: Theory and Practice', the student is able to:- Acquire an overview of leading views on cross-cultural similarities and differences, acculturation, and intercultural communication. - Assess and apply strategies useful for intercultural interaction in business and negotiations, and intercultural communication.- Explain how methodological pitfalls and cognitive biases are relevant for cross-cultural interactions and intercultural communication in the multicultural workplace and other settings.- Conduct a small-scale qualitative, culturally informed, psychological study on a topic of the student's choice.

EUR 900: - The course fee is 900, which excludes the text book. Students are expected to purchase the text book themselves prior to the course or on site. The textbook can also be purchased in the book store on the Tilburg University campus. For more information, see course materials.- Incoming exchange students only pay 700 (discount of >20%). Please provide us with a copy of your acceptance letter or an official nomination form from your home university. The course fee does not include accommodation. You have to arrange accommodation yourself. Tilburg University Summer School recommends booking a room with the housing company directly. If you wish to do so, you can indicate this in your registration.
