Design of Serious Games

This is a one-week course in designing and developing serious games. Serious games are games that are designed for a serious purpose and not only for entertainment (defense, education, scientific exploration, health care, emergency management, city planning, engineering, religion, politics, ect). SEGAN is a network whose goal is to promote the development and use of serious games. iTec is a project whose goal is to develop engaging learning scenarios. During this course we will introduce the iTec scenario: "Students Designing Educational Games".Course topics:1. Serious Games and Game Based Learning, Examples2. Game Design Process and Roles3. Finding the idea and defining goal for the serious game4. Gameplay: challenges and actions5. Game core mechanics: objects and conditions6. Design of game world7. Character design8. Interactive storytelling9. Game Development environments10. Game Development in eAdventure11. Game prototype presentationThe language of the course is English.

Target group
The course is for teachers, educational technologists, designers, developers, story writers, graphical designers and all others who are interested in designing serious games. The goal is to form heterogeneous teams of students with different backgrounds.
Course aim
In teams, students will go through all activities needed for the development of the serious games from selecting the idea and binding it with learning goals to the development of the game prototype in the environment that does not require programming skills.
