This course provides a unique opportunity to have the latest trends, historical understanding and interdisciplinary knowledge about one of the most vibrant fields of educational study in the world at the moment. In today%E2%80%99s world national education policy designs and national curricula are powerfully affected by inter- or transnational flows of information, like international comparisons, in every country. Teachers%E2%80%99 work across the subjects and levels of schooling are similarly influenced by those trans- and international dynamics of political-economic power and scientific knowledge.In the traditional sense, curriculum is conceived as an organizational and bureaucratic centerpiece of education where the relatively unproblematic selection of content and teaching methods create the core. Since the late 1970%E2%80%99s curriculum theory and studies have been experiencing a radical intellectualization and internationalization as a response to globalization with respective intense scholarly exchanges between continents, countries, and regions.The course unravels the new international and national situations in education and curriculum studies in the spirit of history of the present. In the Summer School teachers and students will make jointed efforts to recognize historical, intellectual and political-economic coordinates for the present trends in education policies, curriculum theories and practices and how this complex affects teachers%E2%80%99 work and their possibilities for professional identifications %E2%80" and what possibly will come next?The course content:- The global crisis in education policy, its geopolitics and its theoretical, political and practical affinities (%E2%80%9CGlobal Education Reform Movement%E2%80%9D = GERM, %E2%80%9Ca virus that kills education%E2%80%9D) - The effect of Protestantism, French Enlightenment and German late Enlightenment on our present education and curriculum theories and practices - Current intellectual and political alternatives for understanding education policies, curriculum, and teachers%E2%80%99 work: North American Curriculum, North European Bildung and Didaktik; Chinese Wisdom Traditions (Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism).- Educational leadership and curriculum theory- What would come next after the worldwide crisis of standardization, accountability and privatization in education?
Course leaderThe teachers are internationally acclaimed experts of the topics covered in the Course: Prof. Zhang Wenjun, Zhejiang University, China and Prof. Tero Autio, Tallinn University, Estonia.
Target groupThe course is open to people with MA level degrees who plan to start PhD studies, doctoral and post-doctoral students of educational, cultural or social studies.
Course aimAfter the course, the student will be more familiar with the history and current state of curriculum studies and will be able to understand and "read" different curricula in their organizational and intellectual frameworks: how theoretical and political discussions and debates inform and effect education policies, curriculum studies, curriculum design and teaching practice in different national contexts.
