Dynamics of the Chinese Economy
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
China has been undergoing exceedingly rapid economic transformation in the past half a century, transiting from a planned economy to a market economy. The unprecedented economic reform has lifted China to the ranks of middle-income countries, while the Chinese economy also displays unrivaled complexities, such as urban-rural divide, improving but fragmented social security system, fast urbanization process under the context of hukou restrictions, and enlarging income inequality. Moreover, China%E2%80%99s economic transformation has been closely intertwined with compressed demographic transition marked by sharply reduced fertility and accelerating population aging. Thus, this course not only introduces various aspects of China%E2%80%99s dynamic economy, but also explores the linkages between population change and economic development. We raise a series of questions: What is China%E2%80%99s economic growth pattern and structural change? What is the typical feature of rural industrialization in China? What are the economic consequences of the urban-rural divide? When might China%E2%80%99s demographic dividend end? Investigations into these questions may provide students with a deeper understanding on China%E2%80%99s contemporary society. This course is taught at Fudan Univerity (Shanghai) as part of the China Europe International Summer School (CEISS). CEISS is a collaboration between Fudan University (China), Utrecht University (Netherlands), Freie Universit%C3%A4t Berlin (Germany), LUISS School of Business (Italy), Universit%C3%A0 Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (Italy), University of Copenhagen (Denmark) and Edvance Education International (China), offering summer courses that explore the world's main economic, social and political trends and themes and the way they impact on the economies and societies of Europe and China. This course can be combined with the following CEISS courses:- Management of "MAde in Italy" - Understanding the Italian Way, LUISS Buisness School, 6 - 17 July 2015- Politics, Government and Social Change in China, Fudan University (Shanghai), 6-17 July 2015- Economic Development of EU Member States, Freie Universit%C3%A4t Berlin, 1 - 15 August 2015 - Law and Economics: Competition and Market Regulation in Europe and China, Fudan University (Shanghai), 6-17 July 2015
