East Asian Culture

Broadening your horizon beyond western thought and design concepts.East Asian culture is as old as Western culture, but works in a completely different way and develops a completely different aesthetic. It challenges our thinking habits and our fundamental beliefs. In East Asia cultural concepts like %E2%80%9ESubject%E2%80%9C, %E2%80%9EObject%E2%80%9C, %E2%80%9ENature%E2%80%9C, %E2%80%9EArt%E2%80%9C, %E2%80%9ECommunity%E2%80%9C are conceived differently or may not exist at all. This also means that a different morality is prevalent. It is almost impossible to really understand the culture of East Asia intellectually using only texts. This is the reason the course is multi-faceted, as a travel experience into East Asian culture. We will be embarking on this journey through a broad daily course programme. All courses are taught by international experts: %E2%80%A2 A practical course on East Asian calligraphy and painting%E2%80%A2 A Mind-body training session (Tai Chi or Aikido)%E2%80%A2 A Chinese language course unit, to held you unterstand the underlying concepts of Chinese%E2%80%A2 A reading course with theoretical and literary texts.
Course leader
Dr. phil. Silke Martin & Dr. phil. Simon Frisch
Target group
The course is meant for students of all fields, especially the Humanities, Engineering, Architecture, Designers, Artists and anyone who has in interest in expanding their culture competence beyond Western thinking.
Course aim
The goal for these courses is not to pick up handicraft skills or athletic abilities, or communication skills in a foreign language, but rather to broaden your horizon through practical exercises, to open your mind to a Weltanschauung that is often elusive to Western thinking. In addition to the course programme we have also planned several events: Film screenings, visits to the theatre and performances, insights into East Asian cooking, a tee ceremony, and an excursion to a garden. The course includes both practical artistic works and theoretical and text work, whose focus is on important East Asian texts on culture and philosophy. In addition to providing insight into East Asian culture the course will provide trans-cultural competence. The course is about East Asian culture, philosophy and aesthetic. Conveying East Asian culture in such an experience based way broadens the mind beyond Western thinking and offers a perspective on the mentality of the 21st century, whose problems are strongly influenced by trans-cultural movements. The course language is German.
