Reflecting on ethical issues is important for all academic professionals. To develop this skill, you will study theoretical backgrounds and discuss practical examples during the meetings. You will also work on specific assignments in small groups and write an essay on a topic of your own choosing.During the course you will focus on a critical analysis of the normative perspective in educational science and practice. Ethics is a topic of interest in all educational domains, with issues sparking much debate. You will apply this to topics of academic conceptualisation, policymaking, clinical practice and scientific research. Questions on academic conceptualisation include: What is normal behaviour? Why do you consider a child to have a developmental disorder? What is in the child's best interest? Policymaking is about social issues like caring for disabled children, preventing juvenile delinquency or civic participation. Clinical practice issues include the dilemmas of professional autonomy, privacy issues and child abuse. And, finally, scientific research issues include research integrity, plagiarism, data storage and conflicts of interest. All these examples contain moral views, which will be analysed and criticised. In the programme you will follow lectures, have group discussions and work on group assignments. You will be expected to actively discuss the literature during group sessions, with the aim of developing your analytical and critical reflection skills. A personal essay will be part of the assessment criteria.
