EU Business Law and WTO Trade Practice in Brussels and Geneva

Target group
This Summer program will be organized from the 27th of June to the 17th of July 2015 and is aimed at advanced students (students have completed at least the second year of their degree) from different disciplines (law, political sciences, economics), legal practitioners and policy analysts willing to acquire a better understanding of the European Union Law (with a focus on business law) and international trade law under the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Course aim
We offer a multimodal program from one to three weeks in Brussels and Geneva:1st week program in Brussels (June 29 - July 3) - Introduction to the Legal System of the European UnionIn this course participants learn about how governance of the European Union is organized and the common principles that bind together the twenty-eight member states. This introduction to EU law will explain how the main institutions and bodies of the European Union cooperate with each other in the drafting and adoption process related to legally binding acts, with particular emphasis on the European Court of Justice and the judicial remedies available in the EU legal order. The course also includes a presentation of the various techniques whereby the EU authorities seek to harmonize national legislations and ensure the functioning of the EU's internal market.2nd week program in Brussels (July 6 - July 10) - Aspects of European Union Business LawThis course provides an introduction to some selected aspects of EU business law that are representative of the typical practice of an international law firm, such as competition law (including antitrust and merger control) and intellectual property (IP), in particular issues such as the exhaustion of intellectual property rights and the interface between IP and competition issues. In addition, business and trade-related aspects of environmental law will be covered. Participants will also gain an overview of tax law related to the day-to-day practice of lawyers based in the EU.3rd week program in Geneva (July 12 - July 16) - International Trade Law and Practice under the World Trade Organization (WTO)This course examines legal issues and trade practices under the World Trade Organization (WTO). It begins with a history and overview of the WTO legal system, including obligations and commitments. Topics will include the dispute settlement system and major legal issues under the WTO. Participants will have the opportunity to hear from practitioners about trade-related litigation and hot topics in WTO jurisprudence. The course will include guest speakers from the World Trade Organization and the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) as well as private international litigators.Each week includes conferences, social events and visits to international organizations and to leading law firms in Brussels, Luxembourg and Geneva.

EUR 450: Participants have the right to participate either in the whole Summer Program or in one or several weeks. The registration fee varies depending on the number of the days of attendance. Accommodation and travelling costs to/from Brussels and Geneva are not included. Moreover, students will have to pay for visa and travel insurance, meals and public transportation in Brussels, voluntary day trips. Living expenses are approximately EUR 15-25 per day. The cost includes:- the award of the participation certificate; - courses materials; - visits to the Court of Justice of the European Union (Luxembourg), the European Parliament (Brussels) and World Trade Organization (Geneva);- city tours in Brussels and Geneva;- internet in Campus;- university card to have access to the campus and the library;- welcome breakfast and farewell cocktail lunch in Brussels and Geneva;- individual guidance during the summer program by the coordinator officer;Each participant after the Summer Program will be included into a mailing list of Alumni in order to receive a periodical newsletter in French and offers of internships, jobs and fellowships in Brussels.
