The European Union is one of the most formidable achievements witnessed in Europe. Its law shapes the daily lives of half a billion Europeans %E2%80" a vital field for contemporary study.Despite its complexity, EU Law is built on a handful of basic principles and values which underpin legislation produced by the Union, making the study of EU Law an interesting and challenging endeavour.Combining visits, lectures and interactive seminars, this course will give you a comprehensive overview of European Union Law, its impact on policy fields and the role of the European Court of Justice in providing the law with necessary judicial review.We%E2%80%99ll debate the issues and future viability of EU Law, consider non-discrimination and equality and discuss the dichotomy between citizenship and working rights and the work of the EU Court, as well as exploring the Union%E2%80%99s decision-making process and monetary union.Topics covered in this course include: - The evolution of the EU in its historical context: the interaction of society and law in the EU. - The Substantive Law of the EU: proportionality; equal treatment; non-discrimination; and the four freedoms. - The Introduction of the Citizenship of the Union. - Free Movement of Workers/Persons - Workers vs Citizens: the common market years. - The Court of Justice of the European Union: The pre-Maastricht work towards an area of freedom, between judicial activism and 'une certaine id%C3%A9e pour Europe' and the relevance of the case law in our everyday lives. - The Posted Workers' Directive and the relevant case-law. - Preliminary reference; The EU institutions and the law-making procedures. - The democratic deficit of the EU and the European Monetary Union.A visit to the offices of the UK Representation to the EU, the European Commission, and/or the European Parliament in Brussels will be considered.

Target groupThis course would be of interest to professionals who wish to gain more profound knowledge of the subject; prospective Law students; current Law students studying for credit subject to the agreement of the students' home institution.A background in law, although desirable, is by no means necessary as the module will cover a variety of areas that will suit both those with prior knowledge and those with a newly-founded interest in EU Law.
