This course offers in-depth insight into key issues in the study of gender and politics in the Middle East. It will provide a specific area focus for students interested in women%E2%80%99s studies, feminism, sexuality and gender, but will also provide a gendered approach to the study of politics and society for students interested in Middle East societies, politics and media. Through lectures, readings, discussions and activities, the course will address current debates and processes linked to governance and political participation, Orientalism, colonialism and imperialism, nationalism, militarism and conflict, political activism and transformation, but will also cover other relevant issues such as representation, imagination and artistic productions. In highlighting important issues in the study of gender and politics in the Middle East, the course aims to challenge prevailing stereotypes about women and gender in the region, while fostering critical reflection and political engagement among students.

7.5 ECTS Please note that summer courses are not accredited by SOAS.Students are usually able to obtain credits from their home institution and typically our courses receive 3 credits in the US system and 7.5 ECTS in the European system.
