The first part of the course will address issues of global health determinants, measurements and trends. Epidemiology of disease patterns and health care delivery systems as well as the biological and socio-cultural contexts of health will be presented and major diseases and conditions in developing countries are reviewed. Other fundamental aspects relating to the wellbeing of individuals such as ethics, equity, human rights and cultural and environmental issues are also included. The second part will focus on the biomedical and clinical aspects of the diseases suffered by people in developing countries. The main diseases dealt with during the first week will be discussed in greater detail with emphasis on clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment. Transition in health and the double burden of disease as well as nutritional issues, reproductive health and the influence of injuries and natural disasters and complex humanitarian emergencies will also be covered. The third part will emphasize on collaborative efforts to improve Global Health. Current programs and initiatives will be presented and examples given of the challenges, successes and failures. Future possibilities will be discussed and the entire course will be summed up providing a platform for continued engagement in Global Health.
