This course is for people who are interested in learning about the immense and intrinsic nature of globalization processes as they relate to South Asia. South Asia has a prominent position in how globalization processes are unfolding and transmitting themselves. For instance, flows of culture through art, digital media, film, and migration exist alongside economic flows of trade, transnational families and remittances, and multi-national corporations%E2%80%99 investments and activities. Global South Asia thus exists both within and outside of the geographical region on a scale which requires tools and skills of analysis in charting out these historical as well as rapidly evolving processes. This course introduces students to key concepts in the study of globalization and equips students with the tools they need to examine a range of illustrations and contemporary examples of global South Asia, including culturally rich diaspora communities of London. The syllabus is designed to engage students with core concepts within the area of globalization studies. Students will be introduced to a number of different areas in applying these concepts to develop their understanding of the complexities and extent of these processes. A key feature of the course will be its utilisation of the globalized context of London and its rich resources. Visits to museums and other sites of significance will be embedded in the course structure. The course is particularly intended for students who are either new to the social sciences or the study of South Asia or already have exposure but are interested in expanding their knowledge and critical skills in potentially continuing on with their studies.
