Summer school takes place in the heart of The Hague. The International City of Peace, Justice and Security boasts around 131 international institutes and 80 justice organisations and is one of the United Nations' cities. Since 1913, the Peace Palace has been a centre of world justice, hosting the permanent Court of Arbitrations and the International Court of Justice. You'll also find the International Yugoslavia Tribunal, Europol and the International Criminal Court in The Hague, along with many other courts, tribunals and NGOs. What better place is there to study human security, rights and development?This academic and practical module introduces you to modern security challenges and protecting human rights and looks at the socio-economic development agenda for countries and populations suffering grave injustices and poverty. You'll get acquainted with some general and legal theory with real-life cases and experience how things really work with visits to the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, development organisations and democratic institutions. By the end of this module you'll have an all-round view of peace operations, poverty reduction and basic human rights.You'll get the chance to write an internationally focused research paper with feedback from a panel of experts. Students will also participate in a general module together with students from other disciplines: Change & Innovation in the Public and Private Sectors.

Target group
The program is open to anyone who has completed their high school diploma (or equivalent) and has completed at least their first year bachelor degree level education. Applicants whose native tongue is not English, should have a good knowledge of the English language (Level B2 or higher). The Hague Summer School reserves the right to determine if applicants English language level is appropriate.

Course aim
Objectives of this course are:Recognise (international) security challenges, affecting countries and/or population groups.Develop the ability to take actions and the confidence to take risks to create opportunities for cooperation.Familiarise with human rights. Gain an insight into the workings of international organisations, NGOs and government organisations such as the International Red Cross, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court, development organisations and democratic institutions.Develop and build upon relations with other students from various educational backgrounds and nationalities.Applying the theory and case studies by research and writing a research paper on international issues.

Credits info
4 ECTS The Hague Summer School are assigned ECTS (European Credit Transfer System). The amount of credits for each course depends on whether you choose the two or four week program. The two week program is worth 4 ECTS. It consists of a general module worth 1 ECTS and an elective module worth 3 ECTS. The four week program is worth 8 ECTS. It contains two general modules worth 2 ECTS and two elective modules worth 6 ECTS. Detailed program descriptions and outlines will be provided to the students to facilitate the credit transfer.
