Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Nations and Nationalism in Contemporary Europe
calendar_month 29 Iul 2015, 00:00
This course takes an interdisciplinary approach to questions of nations and nationalism in contemporary Europe. It offers an in-depth review of the main research traditions and approaches in the study of nationalism in such diverse disciplines as cultural studies, gender studies, law, political sociology, political science and sociology. It shows how these various conceptualisations may be applied in concrete case studies. The lectures cover a broad range of themes and geographical areas, underlining that nationalism affects both international politics and people%E2%80%99s everyday lives. In this context, the following questions will be discussed:- How does nationalism impact on processes of European integration?- What is the relation between immigration, cultural diversity and European neo-nationalism/populist radical right?- Why should nationalistic rhetoric that seems blatant to outsiders be acceptable within a particular national context?- Why should the relocation of a historical artefact spark violent riots?- How can nation states manage national pluralism within their borders?

Course leader
Dr. Ov Cristian Norocel

Target group
The course is designed for advanced Bachelor's and Master's level students of humanities and social sciences.

Course aim
The course provides students with the analytical apparatus to critically investigate the construction of nation and nationalist manifestations across Europe from various disciplinary vantage points. The students will deepen their knowledge on how to approach the study of nations in contemporary Europe. They will learn key concepts, several theoretical standpoints and research approaches. They will also have the opportunity to engage first-hand in the examination of selected case studies during the workshops. This will enable them to critically discuss how different theoretical approaches may be best suitable for the study of particular topics, and help them to justify their choice by solidly anchoring it in existing scholarship across various disciplines.
